Polish composer Hania Rani is a real jewel in the Gondwana crown and her score for Joachim Trier's Sentimental Value is a masterclass in intuitive, cinematic minimalism. Composed before a single frame was edited, Rani's piano-led textures and delicate field recordings capture the subtle tension and fluidity between the film's three central characters and their silent, observing house. Her time in Oslo, exploring the family home and recording its ambient sounds, imbues the music with an uncanny sense of lived reality. The result is a hauntingly organic score that is both close yet expansive and it resonates long after the credits roll while again showing Rani to be one of contemporary cinema's most inventive composers.
