London drummer Yussef Dayes - born Yussef Onike Adegbulu and known for his various bands and Experiences with Yussef Kamaal and United Vibrations - has over a short lifetime teleported from south London jam rooms to jet-friendly stages, thanks what one could easily call a certain flam-Africanist mastery over the drum kit. Live From Mt Fuji really does capture Dayes at his peak, mic'ing his kit in perfect phase at the summit of the Nippon mountain, despite bitterly sheer atmospheric conditions. Don't ask us how. A crucial voice comes from Minami Kizuki, whose sanshin lines and vocal phrasing tilt the set toward Japanese folk tonality without breaking the record's rhythmic flow; it's a chuffing experience for any Japanese jazz fan, showing just how far this rizzing drummer has come.
