Hiroshima-based producer Meitei deepens the aesthetic he mapped across his 2020 to 2023 Kofu trilogy with this latest album for UK label Kit Records. Long preoccupied with what he once termed a "lost Japanese mood," Herw, Meitei folds folklore, theatre and urban memory into this gauzy electronic form. 'Hao' opens with grainy vocal fragments and brittle percussion struck from traditional instruments used askew. 'Shin-oiran' and 'Shin-sadayakko' drift through warped melodic figures that surface and dissolve, and on 'Kyugeki', low frequencies throb beneath hiss and distant chimes, while 'Shin-edogawaranpo' closes in suspended ambiguity. The material, refined through years of touring across Japan and Europe, feels sedimented by repetition.
