Candomble is a diasporic religion that has developed in and grown out of Brazil. Its roots lie in the forced migration of enslaved people from West and Central Africa - Bantu, Gbe, Yoruba - and their experience arriving in a strange, hostile continent, where Roman Catholicism had already been planted and was systematically stamping out indigenous cultures.
