The last time Joaquin 'Joe' Clausell appeared on lauded Japanese imprint Mule Musiq, way back ion 2011, it was to deliver an astonishing, 22-minute remix of Kuniyuki Takahashi's 'All These Things'. 'Storm', then, offers a belated return to the imprint from one of house music's most distinctive musical voices. More heavily electronic than some of his admittedly cosmic and spiritual club jams, it sees the NYC-based producer wrap a low-slung, bass-heavy groove in spaced-out vocalisations, free-jazz style synth solos, and jacking, acid house style drum fills. To close the circle, Kuniyuki remixes, adding a dubbed-out, spaced-out feel, extra-layers of freewheeling synth madness, and a deliciously sub-heavy bassline. Impressive stuff all round, as anticipated.
