Roy Ayers died in March 2025; He's Coming arrives again through Verve this summer as both reissue and elegy. This was the 1972 Polydor LP where the Ubiquity sound locked in, with vibes at the front, and backup musicians including Sonny Fortune on soprano and flute, Billy Cobham on drum duties with David Lee Jr, and Harry Whitaker arranging with Ayers and doubling on electric piano. 'He's A Superstar' opens the record, a spiritual funk vamp that Ghostface Killah and DJ Shadow would later take spirit from; in fact the sampleology is strong with this one, as 'Ain't Got Time' is the one J Dilla lifted for Black Star's 'Little Brother'.
