Pandora's Box has survived thousands of years largely because people keep finding new things to place inside it. Manchester-born composer and producer Sam Shepherd adds another handful here. Written for the San Francisco Ballet, this first full-length ballet score moves between orchestral grandeur and electronic unease, never settling comfortably in either camp. 'Hope' begins with a solitary violin line, seemingly in search for firm ground, then 'Rage Of The Gods' sends brass and percussion surging through the arrangement with considerably less patience. 'Her Gift' briefly softens the picture before 'Opening Of The Jar' introduces a faint sense of dread once more. A meeting of two musical worlds.
