For his latest trick, Paris-based deep house veteran Phil Weeks has re-made Evelyn 'Champagne' King's 1982 boogie smasher "Love Come Down" with the assistance of long-serving vocalist Ladybird. Her interpretation of King's vocal - half sung, half spoken, and simultaneously both soulful and sleazy - works particularly well on the "Main Mix", which sits somewhere between reverential electrofunk and rolling contemporary house. Of the various alternative mixes, it's the chunky, effects-laden Dub - clearly inspired the NYC proto-house movement of the early-to-mid-'80s - that stands out, though the stripped-back "Ghetto Mix" is pretty tasty, too. As updates of stone cold classics go, this particular version of "Love Come Down" is rather good.
