Although not as frequently lauded as his Windy City peers, Gene Hunt is a genuine Chicago house original - a DJ/producer whose first jacking dancefloor workouts seeped out of Illinois in the late 1980s. Those roots come to the fore on Sudd Wax debut Cosmic Destiny, Hunt's first solo vinyl outing for five years. Both 'Play With Me' and 'Combustion' are raw, jacking acid tracks rich in clattering TR0-909 drums and twisted, mind-mangling TB-303 motifs. Hunt flips the script a little on B-side opener 'Telephone House', a kind of Chicago take on turn-of-the-90s bleep with nods to sweat-soaked jack-tracks and the immersive deep house of Larry Heard, before opting for a warmer, more organic deep house sound on the fuzzy tactility of 'Way Back'.
