Ewenement? To jest promo wydawnictwa, które samo w sobie jest wydawnictwem promo!

It was my bro, Haz, aka Spot 2, who first put me on to what was happening with the up-and-coming UK Jazz Scene when he played some Ezra Collective and Sons Of Kemet on an early Spots Radio Show. Not long after that, he organised a day trip to the 2018 Jazz re:freshed showcase at the Brighton Dome, where in complete ignorance of what I was watching, I was exposed to the sounds of Yusseff Dayes, Blue Lab Beats, Tenderlonious, Ruby Rushton, Seed Ensemble and Daniel Casimir. There was something special about the vibe at the show that got me excited and wanting to know more about the scene, so after raiding the merch stand at the showcase for as much vinyl as i could afford, I spent the rest of 2018 and 2019 on Bandcamp, compulsively buying the new records being released and following discogs links to find out about the ones I had missed.

Roll forward to late 2019 and the “New UK Jazz” section of my crates was getting kinda stuffed with some great records… and i was in the mood to make a mixtape. From the start I didn’t want it to be some sort of esoteric experimental-Jazz squeak-fest. I like a lot of what has come out of the scene and made it onto wax, but like with all Jazz, I struggle when the musicians get a bit too overindulgent in the freestyle experimentation and take leave of the groove. Perhaps unsurprisingly, given my musical education started with an obsession for Hip Hop, the bits i liked most on a lot of the records were the more uptempo drum-break sections and heavier bass lines, so the plan was to cut out all the best bits, and mix it with a smattering of UK Hip Hop – the genre’s perfect bedfellow! The Mighty Boosh storyline where Howard Moon sells his soul to the Spirit of Jazz to be able to be the “greatest trumpet player in Yorkshire” then gave the tape it’s name and its theme. The result is “Devil Got Souls”.
