Devonte Hynes' Essex Honey is his first Blood Orange studio album since 2018's highly acclaimed genre-bending LP Negro Swan. Hynes, who got his start in the music business when he was 18 playing in London indie band Test Icicles, has become one of the hottest producers in the world - in demand by the likes of Paul McCartney and Solange Knowles - but no matter how busy he gets outside of Blood Orange business, the hype never fades. For Essex Honey, Hynes has enlisted: Lorde, Caroline Polachek, Daniel Caesar, Mustafa, Turnstile frontman Brendan Yates and many more. The single 'Mind Loaded' features Polachek, Lorde and Mustafa who combine beautifully on a choral arrangement. It works predominantly off the vocals and arpeggio guitar but there's some slick left turns into breakbeat and stately grand piano tones. It's always a joy to see Hynes not get bogged down in orthodoxy and fuse that with great production. The New York-based Englishman can do no wrong.
