Berlin guitarist and synth explorer Manuel Gottsching dissolved Ash Ra Tempel in 1975 and reemerged as Ashra, steering into an electronic cosmos that moved away from the acid-soaked space rock of his earlier group. Recorded over spring 1976, New Age Of Earth distilled the kosmische sound into four long-form pieces, blurring minimal repetition and astral drift. 'Sunrain' bubbles with proto-techno insistence, 'Ocean Of Tenderness' bathes in aquatic pulses and natural sound effects, 'Deep Distance' folds surf guitar inflections into icy electronics, while the 21-minute 'Nightdust' unfurls with tenebrious patience, climaxing in Gottsching's soaring electric guitar. First released in 1976 on Isadora, then reissued on Virgin the following year, the album became a touchstone for electronic and ambient music.
