“Ever since I can remember, I've always been into LEGOs. Whenever I had any cash, I'd blow it on new sets because I just loved the act of putting them together. It didn’t spark any euphoria; it was more about just sitting quietly and focusing on the task. It was my favorite thing in life. Sometimes I'd follow the instructions, other times I'd create something entirely my own, and occasionally I'd try to reassemble a set without the instructions - I was curious to see if I could do it,” Tymek Papior told me towards the end of our almost hour-long conversation.
Although we had delved into many seemingly more significant topics, this moment felt pivotal, because today Tymek is still building. Sounds, melodies and experiences, tones, rhythms and memories - Świętochłowice, Rotterdam, and Warsaw’s Old Town. Sometimes following the instructions, but usually doing his own thing, assembling from memory. Sitting in bed, he weaves together love and homelessness, discord and enthusiasm, the deafening clatter of glass shattering in a trash can, and the fleeting twang of his younger sister's harp.
From a broken accordion he played as a child to his rebellion against performing only for the money, he pieces together his past year, which had been often emotionally challenging and demanding. The process is both private and sincere, yet quite loud as he tries to recapture the feelings of childhood - innocence, naivete, curiosity and being present.
“After I finished building it, I usually placed it on a shelf and didn’t touch it again. I wouldn’t break it down unless it was accidentally damaged; I didn’t need to touch it again. The most enjoyable thing was the building itself, as Tymek describes. That’s how it was with this album too... The best part was the process of assembling it - searching for those sounds, discovering myself and my loved ones within them, constantly learning something new. It was all about experimentation and play. Doing it imperfectly and intuitively; not following any instructions!” Tymek concluded.
