Jarvis Cocker has opened Pulp into a nine-piece band for this resounding comeback, their first album in 23 years. With some members having been touring members and part of the Jarv Is... band - Cocker's made them more formally part of of Pulp, which is great because the likes of Emma Smith on violin and guitar (she played with Meilyr Jones previously) is an incredible musician to have around. The lead single 'Spike Island' is a song that like many of Cocker's classics you don't need to hear that many times before it's wedged in your head and your whistling it until the end of time. But Pulp is never in danger on relying on the topline; there's a textured, though-provoking underpinning that hints at how epic their live shows are set to be in the wake of this album, which does look handsome in that particular shade of green.
