Landing here for the first time on vinyl, this album compiles tracks from Cortex, which was Alain Neffe's haunting experimental spoken-word project and was originally issued on tape back in 1984. Neffe is well known for his work with Bene Gesserit and Insane Music, and here crafted Cortex as a raw, minimalist performance piece that is eerie, intimate and deeply evocative with plenty of rich mental imagery. With a glowing narrator lit only by black light and Neffe improvising live on synths, the work aimed for emotional immediacy over polish. These rare recordings were captured informally during rehearsals and show up the synergy between voice and sound. Stark and unfiltered, Cortex is a deeply affecting piece of avant-garde performance art.
