Excitingly, we find London producer and pianist Alfa Mist now build a speculative world, where reincarnation becomes a societal fault line: Roulette is the now well chartered artist's sixth LP (if you're counting last year's King's Place LP) and could well be his artistic vertex so far. A concept suite, there are 15 tracks, each taking up a distinct voice or vantage point asking varying questions of power, memory and the ethics of knowledge. Still present are Alfa's expressive, modal keys and his ease with jazz improvisation as a means to interrogate philosophy's big questions. But now the sound is draped in disinhibited psychedelia sceneries and fractured timings, and 'Roulette', the eight-minute centrepiece, is emblematic of this enough, skirting through tempo shifts. "Music is a constant," he says - the rest is in flux.
