Phonic plunderer Meitei continues his career-long exploration of heritage Japanese spirituality, laying a fresh procession of muenbotoke ("souls without ties") to rest. Sen'nyu unfolds in the misty surrounds of Beppu and Yufuin, rural intermontane localities known for their hot springs and wild panoramas. Meitei's main concern is with a Japan partly forgotten: through their trademark rattling, boggling, and dirt-caked sample work, the artist finally fills the papery bellies of old hungry ghosts: lead single 'Yon-No-Yu' offers a quiescently inspired glimpse into one of Beppu's oldest bathhouses, while a 108-page hardcover book details Meitei's creative process.
