Jazzman's Jazz 45 offshoot has proved to be surprisingly eclectic to date, offering up not only more traditional jazz releases but also some worthy and entertaining experimental fare. This release from Greek duo Kolida Babo (AKA Sokratis Votskos and Harris P) fits into the latter category, combining traditional acoustic instrumentation (duduk, alto sax and double bass) with vintage Moog and Roland synthesizer sounds. While the results definitely fall into the jazz camp, there are distinctive nods towards Greek folk music and, more obviously, early 1970s, synthesizer-fired Krautrock releases. As a result, both 'Spirit of Mauronoros' and 'Kolida Hymn' are cosmic, otherworldly and hard-to-pigeonhole, but also hugely inspiring and entertaining.
